While sclerotherapy involves our doctor injecting a special solution into the collapsed blood vessels or lymph vessels which then causes them to shrink, it is NOT considered surgery, but known as a non-surgical procedure. This is due to not having to open up any part of the body or use stitches to close, making this procedure less invasive.
Many of our patients choose sclerotherapy to treat their spider veins or varicose veins, usually due to cosmetic reasons; however, a doctor can help the patient decide if sclerotherapy is necessary or even suitable for your spider veins/varicose veins.
Anyone who has varicose veins or spider veins will consider sclerotherapy treatment if the veins are very twisted or other previous treatments have failed to work, or if they are dealing with the many uncomfortable symptoms, which include:
– Night cramps
– Legs feeling heavy or tired
Sclerotherapy is considered a non-surgical treatment option for spider veins and varicose veins. Our doctor will inject a chemical known as a sclerosant into the targeted vein which will cause it to collapse and eventually dry out. The vein will become reabsorbed into the body and then disappear afterward.
Sclerotherapy is often recommended for patients with superficial spider veins on the legs and hands. It is less expensive, more effective, and faster than laser treatment which are a few of the many reasons why so many choose sclerotherapy. As well, many who have darker skin will choose sclerotherapy over laser, as laser emits light which can cause discoloration on individuals with darker skin tones.
Laser treatment can be more expensive for spider veins and depending on who you ask a bit more painful. However, laser treatments have been considered one of the top ways to treat spider veins found on the face. There are a few different types of laser treatments available that can work on spider veins and varicose veins including:
– Surface Laser Therapy
– Endovenous Laser Therapy
In the end, the choice to choose sclerotherapy or laser vein therapy will be between you and your vein doctor, as both treatments are equally as good at getting rid of spider veins and varicose veins, and leaving your skin smooth. You and your doctor will need to weigh the pros and cons of what is most important to you, and what would be best for your current situation.
If your varicose veins or spider veins are quite small, you can usually expect to see smooth and clean results in as little as three to six weeks following a sclerotherapy treatment. Larger more pronounced varicose veins may require longer to see results, on average of three to four months before you see desirable results. However, depending on how many spider or varicose veins need to be treated, and how large they are will depend on how many treatments may be necessary to achieve the results you are looking for.
Spider veins and varicose veins tend to respond to sclerotherapy treatment well, and do not usually come back; however, new veins may appear.
Our doctor will likely want to schedule a follow-up appointment with you around a month after the treatment to determine how the treatment went, and if you need more sessions to get the desired results you are looking for. Usually, you will need to wait around six weeks before you can do another round of sclerotherapy.
On average, our patients will normally receive around four treatment sessions of sclerotherapy to see optimal results of spider vein or varicose vein removal. Usually, more than that is not necessary, as many patients will see a 70-90% improvement in their appearance, as well as the symptoms.
