Sclerotherapy is one of the most effective means of spider vein removal. If the veins respond to the treatment the results are permanent and those veins will not reappear. The smaller veins will often respond quicker than the larger ones, with most vanishing in around three to six weeks. Larger and more obvious veins can take up to three to four months before they are gone completely.
Sclerotherapy was first developed in the 1930s and has been in use for almost a century now. Over that time the methods, chemicals involved, and success rate of the treatment have only improved. The treatment involves injecting a specialized solution directly into the affected vein, causing it to collapse and scar, which forces the blood to move through healthier veins eliminating the redness. It is considered the most effective treatment for small spider veins, and it is the main option used by most vascular and vein specialists. Because Sclerotherapy results in the damaging and scarring of the vein, it will not be used on veins that could be used for bypass surgery later in life.
Sclerotherapy sometimes causes small welts or bruises to appear where the injections were performed and may result in the areas affected by spider veins looking worse. This is temporary and the welts and redness will disappear within the same period it takes the spider veins to fade.
The speed of the treatment depends largely on the size of the veins and the number of veins that require treatment. Larger veins will require more injections and more sessions for sclerotherapy to be effective whereas smaller veins are often gone after one or two injections. However, follow-up treatments are usually performed to make sure that the initial treatment was effective. Overall, most patients require two to four treatments to get the desired results.
As mentioned previously, Sclerotherapy is the main recommendation of the most vein and vascular specialists, especially for smaller veins. Laser treatment is generally more painful, more expensive, and more time-consuming than Sclerotherapy and is not used for shallower spider veins near the surface of the skin. However, depending on the depth of the veins being treated and the patient’s reaction to the solution utilized in Sclerotherapy, Laser treatment may be the more effective choice. Laser treatment can reach much deeper veins than sclerotherapy. The bruises caused also do not last nearly as long as those caused by the Sclerotherapy injections. Laser Treatment is more painful and being able to resist that pain will determine whether the treatment is right for you. At the end of the day, however, both treatments approach spider vein elimination in the same way, by collapsing the afflicted vein and rerouting the blood. It is only the means of achieving that end that differ, and you can expect effective results from either treatment if approached correctly.
